NeuroDays 2024 will delve into the fascinating realms of consciousness and unconsciousness. This year’s event will explore four main themes: unconscious states, non-ordinary states of consciousness, associated pathologies, and a philosophical examination of consciousness.

Historically, the brain wasn’t always seen as the seat of consciousness. Early beliefs often considered the mind and consciousness as separate from the body. Today, we understand the brain as the epicenter of our thoughts, the nucleus of our consciousness, and the regulator of our various states of awareness. Consciousness can be defined as the immediate awareness of one’s own mental activity, in contrast to unconsciousness, where there is no response to environmental stimuli.

Consider the common experience of saying, “sorry, I was somewhere else.” Daydreams, brief absences, or hallucinations are examples of “normal” altered states of consciousness. Additionally, we experience deliberately induced altered states during anesthesia or hypnosis.

What happens during these different states? Are we truly “elsewhere”? How aware are we of our environment?
